Book Review: Warrior of Woden

Title: Warrior of Woden
Author: Matthew Harffy

AD 642. Anglo-Saxon Britain. A gripping, action-packed historical thriller and the fifth instalment in the Bernicia Chronicles. Perfect for fans of Bernard Cornwell.

Oswald has reigned over Northumbria for eight years and Beobrand has led the king to ever greater victories. Rewarded for his fealty and prowess in battle, Beobrand is now a wealthy warlord, with a sizable warband. Tales of Beobrand’s fearsome black-shielded warriors and the great treasure he has amassed are told throughout the halls of the land.

Many are the kings who bow to Oswald. And yet there are those who look upon his realm with a covetous eye. And there is one ruler who will never kneel before him.

When Penda of Mercia, the great killer of kings, invades Northumbria, Beobrand is once more called upon to stand in an epic battle where the blood of many will be shed in defence of the kingdom.

But in this climactic clash between the pagan Penda and the Christian Oswald there is much more at stake than sovereignty. This is a battle for the very souls of the people of Albion.

My Review

Ok, I went into this book blind as a bat. I had no clue this was book number five (5) in a series. To be honest, I would have never read this until I read the first four (4) books. I never feel that I can give a good review without reading the entire series. I still feel that since I do not know the entire backstory of the characters I can not give a review of the story line since I do not know what happened beyond the hints that the author gave in this book.

For what I can tell you though, is this book was quite interesting though there were parts that left me confused though I think that they would have been cleared up if I had read the first four (4) books. The author has researched his subject and the story line does make me want to read the first four (4) books.

I enjoyed the characters and they were well written. Though I think there is a love triangle or something that is going on between the wives of the leaders, but again I am not sure as it would be in the back story. You can read this book as a stand alone, but if you are anything like me then you may get confused with some of the characters reactions and attitude with each other.

If you like historical fiction then I do recommend the book, but I would start with the first one before this one. The reading order goes:

  1. The Serpent Sword (The Serpent Sword (Bernicia Chronicles #1)
  2. The Cross and the Curse (Bernicia Chronicles #2)
  3. Blood and Blade (Bernicia Chronicles #3)
  4. Killer of Kings (Bernicia Chronicles #4)
  5. Kin of Cain: A Short Bernicia Tale (Bernicia Chronicles)

I would read these before reading this one. That way you know what is going on in the back story and how the characters relate to each other.

My Review

This book is amazing! I did not think that this books would as good as it was. The story line, the plots, the characters, everything was a wonderful read. From the very start the book was enthralling and very hard to put down. The main character, Jasminda, is such a wonderful character you can’t help but cheer her on and hope for the best.

The layers in this book is amazing. I am currently looking at other books this author has written to read. I can not wait to see what she writes next. This book keeps you enthralled and it is very hard to put down. I did not want this book to end, but alas it did. Now I have to wait till the next one comes out so I can find out how Jasminda handles her new powers she received.

If you like fantasy novels then you will love it. The characters are wonderful and the plot lines are easy to follow yet still leaves you with questions. I know I say this often but I would recommend this book highly if you like fantasy novels.

Book Review: The Sixth Victim

Title: The Sixth Victim
Author: Tessa Harris

London’s East End, 1888: When darkness falls, terror begins . . .

The foggy streets of London’s Whitechapel district have become a nocturnal hunting ground for Jack the Ripper, and no woman is safe. Flower girl Constance Piper is not immune to dread, but she is more preoccupied with her own strange experiences of late.

Clairvoyants seem to be everywhere these days. Constance’s mother has found comfort in contacting her late father in a séance. But are such powers real? And could Constance really be possessed of second sight? Following the latest grisly discovery, Constance is contacted by a high-born lady of means who fears the victim may be her missing sister. She implores Constance to use her clairvoyance to help solve the crime, which the press is calling “the Whitechapel Mystery,” attributing the murder to the Ripper.

As Constance becomes embroiled in intrigue far more sinister than she could have imagined, assistance comes in a startling manner that profoundly challenges her assumptions about the nature of reality. She’ll need all the help she can get—because there may be more than one depraved killer out there . . .

My Review

I am still processing this book even after I have finished it. It is set during the time of Jack the Ripper (still can’t believe they haven’t solved that one) killing rampage. It is told from alternate points of view (which the author made it very easy to tell which point of view you were reading). For which I am grateful. There are multiple plot lines and characters to keep track of. It is a very easy enthralling read so that is not an issue.

The reason I gave it four (4) stars is because I really wanted to have more of a who is Jack the Ripper plot line in it. So the star rating was my disappointment. Otherwise I would have given it a full five (5) stars. This is a fault of my own making not the author or publisher.

Constance is a wonderful character that, frankly, deserves more credit for what she is and even though she is the main character she seemed to be shoved to the side by the force of the side characters, but this my just be my opinion and observations. The characters are very well written and you are able to use your own imagination as to what they look like and how they move.

If you like mysteries and this time era then I do recommend this book. Even if you don’t normally read this type of book I think you will enjoy the surprises that are found within this book. Ghosts, murder, secret societies, etc. who couldn’t enjoy this?

Book Review: School for Psychics

Title: School for Psychics
Author: K.C. Archer

An entrancing new series starring a funny, impulsive, and sometimes self-congratulatory young woman who discovers she has psychic abilities—and then must decide whether she will use her skills for good or…not.

Teddy Cannon isn’t your typical twenty-something woman. She’s resourceful. She’s bright. She’s scrappy. She can also read people with uncanny precision. What she doesn’t realize: she’s actually psychic.

When a series of bad decisions leads Teddy to a run-in with the police, a mysterious stranger intervenes. He invites her to apply to the School for Psychics, a facility hidden off the coast of San Francisco where students are trained like Delta Force operatives: it’s competitive, cutthroat, and highly secretive. They’ll learn telepathy, telekinesis, investigative skills, and SWAT tactics. And if students survive their training, they go on to serve at the highest levels of government, using their skills to protect America, and the world.

In class, Teddy befriends Lucas, a rebel without a cause who can start and manipulate fire; Jillian, a hipster who can mediate communication between animals and humans; and Molly, a hacker who can apprehend the emotional state of another individual. But just as Teddy feels like she’s found where she might belong, strange things begin to happen: break-ins, missing students, and more. It leads Teddy to accept a dangerous mission that will ultimately cause her to question everything—her teachers, her friends, her family, and even herself.

Set in a world very much like our own, School for Psychics is the first book in a stay-up-all night series.

My Review

This book took me by surprise. The layers in this story is wonderful. It keeps you hooked from the first page. Teddy is a woman that a lot of people (including herself) don’t understand. The author did a wonderful job as to make you think that this is a possibility and that there is a school like it. Do not think this book is going to be an adult version of Harry Potter. There is no magic in this book. Just simple believable mind powers that the author makes you believe could be possible and who knows it just might.

The characters and story line is so well written that you know what they are going to do but at the same time you still have the ability to make a mistake about what they did and how they handled them. Personally, I expected this book to go a complete different way then it went. I, for one, can not wait for the next book in the series to come out to find out what happens to Teddy and the rest of the misfits.

I recommend this book to everyone that enjoys a captivating read. Be fore warned though that you may wind up reading it all night long.
